FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / April 1, 2003
_
TEAMS UNVEILED FOR
X GAMES GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP I
Athletes From Around the World to Compete in Summer and Winter Action Sports Simultaneously;
Two Venues to Host Events May 16-18: San Antonio, Texas and
Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Resort, B.C.
_
ESPN announces the invitation of the best two athletes from six world regions in 11 different summer and winter action sports to compete at the inaugural X Games Global Championship May 16-18._ The unique competition will mark the first-ever multi-day, dual-venue, winter and summer action sports event that will focus on athletes competing on behalf of their team._ To date, action sports events and competitions have been based primarily on individual performances.

_
X Games Global Championship I includes 11 events in six sports categories taking place simultaneously at two venues: Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas (seven events from four summer sports) and Whistler Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia (four events from two winter sports). (See page two for details)._ The six competing teams represent different regions of the world: U.S., Europe, Canada, South America, Asia and Australia._ Each of the teams will consist of two athletes per region for each sport discipline (note: women's Ski SuperPipe will have one athlete per world region).

_
X Games Global Championship will have the best in each sport working to benefit their teammates in the challenge to become Global Champion._ With the breadth of athleticism around the globe, competition should be fierce._

_
REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
USA:_ Freestyle Moto X athlete Mike "The Godfather" Metzger has taken the gold medal in the last three X Games Moto X competitions, thanks to his groundbreaking backflip tricks._ Kelly Clark, gold medallist at Winter X Games VI, 2002 Winter Olympics and 2003 European Open, teams with Gretchen Bleiler, gold medallist at Winter X Games VII and the 2003 US Open, in the Women's Snowboard SuperPipe._ Dave Mirra, the most decorated X Games gold medallist in history (11), will compete in both Bike Stunt Vert and Park._

_
Canada:_ Bike Stunt competitor Jay Miron has won nine X Games medals._ Sarah Burke and Natasza Zurek are former ESPN Action Sports and Music Award athletes of the year in women's Ski and Snowboard categories, respectively._ Women's Snowboard SuperPipe's Maelle Ricker, a Whistler local, is a member of the Canadian National Snowboard Team._ Pierre Luc Gagnon is the X Games VIII Skateboard Vert gold medallist._ Men's Snowboard SuperPipe's Guillaume Morisset recently took two podium spots at the 2003 Nippon Open in Superpipe (bronze) and Big Air (gold).

_
Asia:_ The power of two is in full effect as the Yasutoko brothers (Eito and Takeshi) compete in Aggressive In-line Skate Vert._ Together they hold eight X Games medals._ Shuji Ueyama will play the dual role as he teams up with X Games veteran Seiji Saito for Bike Vert and with Kenji Tsuruta for Bike Park._ All three riders competed at Asian X Games V; Seiji and Kenji took home medals at that event.

_
Europe:_ Aggressive In-Line Vert's Taig Khris is a five-time medallist at the X Games and landed the first-ever double backflip in competition (X Games VII)._ The Men's Ski SuperPipe team is a driving force with Candide Thovex and Jon Olsson, Winter X Games VII gold and bronze medallists, respectively._ Rune Glifberg, Skateboard Vert athlete, is a five-time X Games medallist._ Europe's Bike Stunt Vert discipline has Jamie Bestwick, an X Games VI Gold medallist, and Simon Tabron, three-time X Games medallist._ Olympians lead the men's and women's snowboard teams, including Gian Simmen (men's halfpipe gold medal, 1998) and Doriane Vidal (women's halfpipe silver medal, 2002).

_
Australia:_ The Skateboard Vert team is solid with Renton Millar and Jake Brown, both known for their technical tricks._ Moto X Freestylist Dayne Kinnaird is currently ranked number one in the World Freestyle Association Series._ Women's Snowboard SuperPipe athlete Holly Crawford is the 2002 Australian National Halfpipe Champion._ Bike Stunt Park's Colin Mackay is the silver medallist from Asian X Games V._ Aggressive In-line Skate Vert athlete Shane Yost is the 2002 ASA World Championship silver medallist.

_
South America:_ This region boasts the toughest overall Skateboard lineup with Carlos de Andrade and Rodil de Araujo, Jr. in Park and Bob Burnquist and Sandro Dias in Vert._ De Araujo took gold in Skateboard Park, Best Trick and Street at X Games VIII._ One of the most respected riders in the world, Bob Burnquist boasts eight X Games medals._ Aggressive In-line Skate Vert athlete Fabiola da Silva - now an action sports legend - is the only female to compete in Aggressive In-line in San Antonio.

_
Each athlete receives points for their team based on the final leader board position within their sport discipline (first place, 12 points; points descend to one point for 12th place)._ Results from each competition at both venues will be combined for an overall team score._ The primary outcome of the entire event will be to crown one of the six teams the X Games Global Champion. Individual performances will also be recognized.

_
ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports will combine to televise 12 original hours of coverage from X Games Global Championship I, May 17-21, 2003, with a one-hour special on ABC on May 24._ ESPN International will distribute coverage of the event worldwide, including on TSN in Canada.

_
Tickets for the Alamodome are free to the public._ Due to the location of the SuperPipe venue at the summit of Whistler Mountain, a lift ticket is required to obtain access to the event._ The resort will offer both "spectator" passes and reduced lift ticket prices.

Hardly

I don't think those guys would appreciate being called "bargain basement" athletes.

Your suggestions would be? (Remember, they have to be available to ride...)

I know you guys love to think that the X Games are fixed, but they aren't. Sorry to all the naysayers out there.

Only really interested in the European selection!
I can name at least 6 better riders for 'MOTO X'.

Alio Gaup
Fabian Bauersachs
Chris Brock
Gary Taylor
Sean Vukovic
Jamie Squibb
Oystein Kjorstad
Jimmy Verburgh

Yep.. and the have all beaten Wolter this year... Although wolter is a world class rider!
Which blind and 'on the take researcher' got Troux? Last time I heard anything from that guy he was busting huge in a wheelchair! No offence Troux... your far better the me and an old school guy... but please... Oliver Hegarty is better then him! No really he is!!!

Alternates....

If you have bios or web links to those guys post em. Only two riders were chosen from each country or region. All I know is that a lot of calls were made, some guys aren't available and many were consulted. This is the first Global X and I think it is a pretty cool format. Now that it is on the radar screen hopefully more info will be available on these guys and there will be more constant awareness of what is going on with Moto-X in other countries. We have an Aussie forum, maybe it is time for a ( geez i can't type it- it sounds so lame, evilIII come up with a better name ) yes, euro-forum. (eek!)
