i hate too much...
i only have respect for bands who use actual music instruments...plus actually have talent...
but right at this moment, i hate all forms of what is called soft metal...even though it's a disgrace to even have the name "metal" to it *shudders*
e.g. Disturbed, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Powerman 5000, Papa Roach, Coal Chamber, Sevendust ETC ETC ETC
You name it, i hate it

I hate popular music because it is untalented crap (for the most part)... not to follow a trend.

I am no one to bash someones oppinion of music, I listen to everything, but.......How can you call a band like Disturbed untalented?? I haven't heard very many of there songs at all, but I would never consider calling them un-talented. Now, I've listened to some of the "heavy" stuff you and poog are always raving about, but how much talent does it take to play a metal riff and scream/growl into the mic so no one can understand you????
There has to be some bias against it because it's popular, and I can understand that to a degree. When I first started listening to Jack Johnson nobody knew who he was, now he sells out concerts in 30 minutes. There's a band called Hot Sauce Johnson, I dig them, alot, but no one knows of them. I want it to stay like that and I kinda wish Jack wasn't so popular, but there is no way I am going to stop listening to Jack because he's popular or if HSJ ever goes big.........ya know.
It''s funny, a lot of people that are so anti-trend are fooling themselves. In there minds, there are two people, the people that wear Abercrombie, Polo, Dockers, etc etc etc, those are the people that are "followers" of a trend. Then there are the people who consider themselves anti trend because they refuse to wear stuff based on the label saying it's popular. In my mind that's funny, because if you do or don't do something because of how other people perceive it you are still a slave to that trend.

Preach on Phort! I completely agree with you - either way: whether you listen to what's "popular" and buy clothes for the labels or you listen to underground and are anti-corporate clothing you are still part of a trend, like it or not. There ws a local band in my area that used to play covers and some originals - they had quite a following and were quite talented. Now everybody has heard of them, has it stopped me from listening to them? Nope, cause I like the music and have respect for them cause they fought long and hard to get where they are now...
That band is known as STAIND

I wasnt really bashing anyone personally. I hope I didnt come across that way. I just dont like the style of music Nikelback makes and Poppy music. I give any new band a try that I hear about, like Ive been told about In Flames and KSE. Which is not really my style but I respect others who like them. I am more into Deftones. Which people are bashing and I cant beleive it. But I dont want to be talking about the same thing in 2 different threads. Sorry all......doh!!!:(

I simply can't stand country, and then on the top of my list is all this hip hop crap! What is with it all there is no talent in it at all it is recordings of some stupid beat with some idiot singing with it. Where did all the talented musicians go? Zeppelin, Gus'n'Roses, ACDC, Metallica, Van Halen, Dio... pretty much all the 70's and 80's rock, that is the good stuff!!!

if someone can prove to me that disturbed is more talented than KsE or In Flames then i will shut up. it is NOT true. add to the mix the production that goes into a disturbed album....they are not all they are cracked up to be. on the other hand...In Flames is one of the most talented bands to ever grace metal.

No arguement here, but just because Disturbed may not be as talented as KsE(and they're not anywhere near as talented...) Doesn't make them suck... Money makes a BIG difference when it comes to producing an album - disturbed has the ching to make them sound really refined and talented, KsE doesn't need the money to make them sound that way... It's all a matter of opinion, I happen to like 'em both:D
p00g0blin
November 13th, 2002, 04:57 PM
exactly..there is your difference. the KsE album sounds amazing...the production is perfect..but not overdone. once you see them live, you know that is really them on the album. now when you hear a band like Papa Roach or Disturbed...and then you see them live...you hear all the differences...all the stuff they cleaned up in the recording studio.

Man.. pick up a guitar, and tell me how long it takes you to learn to play an entire Disturbed song. Then tell me how long it takes you to learn to play an entire In Flames or Killswitch Engage or Avenged Sevenfold, or almost ANY 'underground' metal or hardcore band. There is so much more that goes into the stuff I am a fan of than any of the new metal stuff.
I have been playing guitar on and off for a few years now. I still suck hardcore. Like not good at all. But you know what? I could learn to play a Disturbed song within an hour, and have it memorized and play along with the song (if I really sat down and went through it). If I studied and tried to learn an In Flames song in an hour, I would probably get through about the first 30 seconds of the song... depending on which one it is. There is a lot that I wouldn't be able to play at all.
So to answer "how much talent does it take to play a metal riff and scream/growl into the mic so no one can understand you???? "... a CRAPLOAD. I'd like to see you scream in such a way that it sounds good, and so that people like the way it sounds. Add to it the length of time they can scream consistently... along with the way they transfer to singing and not have their voice give out or crack at all... and STILL sound good.
The fact that a band is popular means nothing to me. If I like them, I like them, I could care less who they are. I love Chevelle. They are on the radio all the time. I don't like most of the stuff on the radio because it really is terrible.
Another thing, I am not 'anti-trend.' I don't try to follow any trends, or stray from any trends, either. I do what I want, I like what I like, and I do it all because thats the way I think, not the way anyone else thinks. If I fit a trend, it's not on purpose.

Definetly well said Cody.
Looks like phortwunty should have put some thought into what he was saying before he made his comment to us who are really into music and know what it takes to actually make music before he opened his mouth on this subject.
And obviously it takes more talent to play metal riffs and scream than distured has because I don't hear them doing it. All I have heard and I don't ever consider it a scream is his ### attempt at a growl, which I cannot stand.
That's enough for me because I could go on forever why they aren't talented.
Jester
November 14th, 2002, 01:56 AM
i agree with cody totally.. but for me.. its not so much about the talent... (i mean, it is to some degree...) but i like bands where i can understand what theyre saying ;) lol.. for the most part anyway.. i mean.. i recognize that a lot of those metal bands have SOOO much talent.. i mean.. i couldnt play many of their songs anyway, then alone singing too! i got nuthin against them.. but for the most part.. when i listen to my music, id rather not hear some dude screaming at me.. it just makes me nervous!! hahhahah... i like some kse songs, and some in flames songs... (i saw in flames when they came with slayer.. what a wicked live band they are!!).. anyway... i like a lot of stuff.. from nu metal, to punk, to old rock, to whatever... i just like rock in general....
as for nickelback... hmm... their new stuff just sucks.. i mean, they are just like the backstreet boys of rock now... but back in the day.. that was some good stuff... i wish u guys could have been here for that... (edmonton is where they started out...) anyway... back seeing them play little club shows here and there... they kicked ###.... they were a perfect mix of nirvana and pearl jam... just awesome small club live show... but now theyre the same as offspring... they were good.. until they saw money...

im not saying that you can't listen to any of that stuff.. thats not what i meant at all. everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. and i just stated mine and explained how i could call disturbed untalented ;) there are always exceptions to that. i dont think that the music i listen to is the only talented stuff out there.

all bands are great until they see the dollar signs, take Good Charlotte, they are a local band, I knew them in high school (by knew I mean I met them at parties once or twice, and talked to them about music and bull####), used to be completely normal guys, normal haircuts, played baseball, not huge dorks like their songs make them out to be, and they played fairly straightaway good pop-punk, hard but with good hooks and melodies, then they got signed, their first album came out, Benji got all inked up and dyed his hair, spiked it out, absurd, the songs were glossed over by some record company producer, stupid :( , good band wasted, some ### at the company went "you know you could make a lot more money if you looked like this, and we made this song just a littlemore catchy" depressing to see that happen :m16:

people may not like the screaming in most metal...but it takes a hell of a lot more talent to do than making stupid NOISES like the guy from disturbed does. the song in the snowmobile part of Crusty 7.....half the song isnt even words. crap.

Chevelle is awesome. I have liked them for a few years. They are even better in concert. The brothers are all cool too. I saw them a few weeks ago and also got the chance to meet them. When a band takes time out to sign CDs and talk to you after their show makes them appreciated more. Most bands just play their songs and then the show is over....

alright..simple comparison time. disturbed vs in flames guitars. to prove what it takes to play a metal riff. im trying to be fair here...it would be easy for me to post the tabs for "swim" and the argument would be over...disturbed would have no chance against that song. so i found a disturbed song...prayer..i think...and i got the tabs for "Brush The Dust Away" from in flames. i picked that one cuz it starts out fairly simple.
here is just the verse parts for the disturbed song. both guitars.
p00g0blin
November 14th, 2002, 02:14 PM
here is the FIRST verse riff in the in flames song. this one starts out simple like i said...but it gets much much more technical as things progress. typical of in flames. and i must mention that the disturbed song continues on...never really changing.
p00g0blin
November 14th, 2002, 02:17 PM
i think this is verse b of the in flames song. you might notice something in this one....the THIRD guitar. the only other band to successfully use three guitars and gain a ton of fame was Iron Maiden. i think we have our winner. but if you want me to keep going...i could.

November 14th, 2002, 02:19 PM

p00g and cody have both got really good points. but still somebody said earlier that just because on band is a little more talented than the other dosn't mean totally blow monkey balls. just like p00g and cody said and showed that In Flames does do alot more wit the guitar and disturbed is a little easier cuz i tried them myself still does not make them totally suck....i really don't know what i just said because i had a whole bunch of mixed emotions stirring up inside of me so if anybody can make sense out of that....congrats...:)lol.......................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................h ad to do that because i didn't want to mix this in wit the other stuff, i hate rap and i am starting to like Killswitch Engage

but like ive said...im totally attracted to talent. i dont really like punk anymore...but i LOVE Strung Out...why? cuz they are super talented. Lawrence Arms? amazing song writing. In Flames and Killswitch Engage? hell....i dont think we need to say anymore about them. Disturbed? haha...no talent....so they suck to me. im not saying every band i like is super talented...but the Nu-Metal stuff is all the same...over produced MTV kiss a$$ #####. screw that.

tabs are pretty easy. the strings are:
E
B
G
D
A
E
and the number is the fret you use. if two numbers are directly above or below each other...then that is a chord. single numbers are single notes. closer the numbers are...the faster you play them. the person writing the tabs will usually give you a BPM and then you have to figure out the rhythm of the song. im forgetting a ton of info...but that is the basis of it.

Yeah i know how to read them, just gettin the rythems and timing is hard if you havent heard the song.
Plus after the easy stuff some of it gets really hard to read and play.

oh well hell yeah, because it's not sheet music...
that's why you've gotta know the song, or play with it when you're learning it to figure it out...it's VERY hard to just look at TAB and play a song without even hearing it lol
i'd give you $100 if you could play a random tab, with never hearing the song :p (that's not a real offer)

well i do have to say that the lack of talent has a LOT to do with them sucking. i used to like the Sex Pistols...i still can listen to them sometimes...but when i do...i just laugh after awhile...the playing is just horrible.
