i'm always reading what some of you guys are saying aout how you need a lot of experience before you try a ramp, why is that? i've never done it, but it doesn't look at all hard. i have heard that you get a hell of a lot more traction so not to go hard on the throttle, but what else makes it hard? thanks.

there are millions of reasons why hiting a metal kicker is so much harder than a normal dirt lip....sure it sounds easy because you dont have to worry about ruts and you have plenty of traction...but its not as easy as it sounds
i could tell you everything i knew about hitting a ramp right now but it would probably better for you to wait and see what SLIDER and CRUSTY have to say!

i would think ramps are easier too, no ruts, no funny lips, good traction

i think the hadest part is getting used to the launch....unless its a distance ramp, the launch is alot steeper than most dirt hits, especially ones on a race track! plus you gotta make sure your pinned going up the launch cuz if you let off itll kick your back end straight up, or at least thats what happend to me...

The hardest thing is that if you get the jump wrong (overjump, caseout, endo, whatever) you will most likely get hurt badly.

They throw you so high up, that there is NO room for error.

With dirt hits, you may still get hurt, but it probably wont be as bad as off a ramp.

crkid,
This is a picture of a rider going off an IFMA ramp designed to be very close to my Rev.1 ramps.

This rider is 155# and the bike has pro supercross suspension +5 stiffer. He is about 1/2 throttle on a stock engine and gearing 2001 CR250 with a FMF pipe. His suspension was bottomed out and has already began rebounding which gives him the magical "pop" riders love.

Granted, this is one of the most aggressive ramps out there. They don't have to be this aggressive but...

I won't say you can't do it, just about anyone with good jumping skills can if the landing is close and built for you and your bike. Most riders do a dry run several times before hitting a ramp the first time, they look so scarry as you approach them.

It's cause you get scared going up to them and most people tend to let off when they're scared or hitting a big jump!

When you're approaching a ramp, it just looks like a wall!

yeah, this is what mine looked like when u werea bout to hit it.

pretty damn scary when youve never hit one b4, and u cant see the landing...I cant believe i made a mistake that stupid (making a small landing..)

thanks guys. i have hit dirt jumps before that give you that "pop" you're speaking of and jumped up huge, nearly vertical hillclimbs. if all it is is keeping on the throttle and getting the balls to do it, i know i could do it. i think i'm gonna build one soon.

the landing ramp im gonna make is gonna be like a huge table top im gonna have like a 30 foot safety pad thing then the downslop so i can go over it slow at first cause im gonna put the ramp right up close to it.

THESE DAYS, EVERYONE IS EITHER THINKING THEY CAN JUMP RAMPS, WANTING TO, OR JUMPING THEM. THEY ARE NOT A BIG THING IF YOU DONT WANT TO GET HIGH OR DO BIG TRICKS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO JUST JUMP, THEN THEY ARENT OF NEED. BELIEVE ME, THEY ARE HARDER THEN THEY LOOK, THEY ARENT JUSTR SOME SIMPLE THING. YOU HAVE TO FACTOR IN SPEED, TRAJECTORY, ETC. WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO LOOK AT A DIRT JUMP AND SAY, "UMM 2ND GEAR FULL THROTTLE," YOU CAN JUMP, BUTI IF YOU ARE JUST HITTING JUMPS NUTS, CASING SOMETIME SAND OTHERS OVERCLEARING OR LANDING IN LOOP OUT POSITION, I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST LAYOING OFF THE RAMP IDEA FOR A WHILE. RAMPS ARE DIFFICULT, YOU DONT GIVE AS MUCH SPEED ON THE APPROACH, ITS MORE OF ALL YOUR SPEED OFF THE LIP, WHERE IN DIRT, YOU ARE PINNING IT FOR THE MOST PART. JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT JUMP RAMPS, DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS OF A JUMPER, TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE GETTING HURT FROM INEXPERIENCE, OR INPROPER RAMP DESIGN. THATS WHY YOU SHOULD LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS WHEN YOU WANT A RAMP. WELL THATS ABOUT ALL I GOT. TAKE IT EASY!
