View Full Version : Should local tracks add Freestyle ramps?

So it is common knowledge that the top racers in the world are bred from a racing career that began at their local track. Do you think that local tracks should add Freestyle ramps so the sport can grow, or do you think that it is too much of a risk for local tracks to bear?

I know from my own mistakes that it takes more than guts to jump ramps perfectly. If u dont have great skills, i ramp will hurt u quick.

Maybe on club days there could be a fenced off section with a ramp, and only the top level riders could go in?

that u could have a ramp like the distlers set at only 50 to 60 feet then have kind of a table top landing after it so it would be just like a table top but with a ramp at the front

hmm i gues thatd be a bit safer...but it still should be restricted to like atleast mid-level riders.

otherwise some guy whose just started riding will hit it, and either endo or loop out on it and get seriously hurt..

We both know that a lot of people would benefit from having ramps at their local track but, there has got to be some sort of
regulation on who can ride them.Freestyle has proven that it's
not a "FAD" it has became a legitamite part of motorcycling. I
think that the natural progression and acceptance of F/S will
lure the tracks to step-up and get with the program.

if ramps are so much trouble why dont they have a dirt table top or double with a higly maintained dirt up ramp with the same kind of measurments as a ramp. would that be just the same as a ramp or not wroth the high maintenance. u could even fence the jump off like crusty said and have a sign or sumthin saying. "WARNING, FREESTYLE JUMP, FOR HIGH LEVEL RIDERS ONLY"

Or decrease the size length and steepness of it!

i think local tracks should have some ramps set up. i come from ontario canada where the local clubs kick you out for doing a one hander to celebrate a victory!! if i had ramps here it would be alot easier, being the only freestyler in the area at the moment it would give me some people to ride with!

what!! thats lame! the only reson were all in this sport (or should be) is to have fun getting thrown out for a 1hander BS! but i am undesided (how ever you spell it) about ramps at tracks. i think it would be reall cool if someone opened a "freestyle only" track the only big problum would be a law suit and that still wouldnt be hard just have a waiver like at skateparks. you could even make one at your house if you had the land and a tractor. hmmm thats not a bad idea:rolleyes:......... i think i might try that!! :D

I think that ramps would be sweet, but like everyone else says, there would be serious lawsuits goin down when people get hurt. I think they shoud have progressive jumps, that was people who are just starting to jump could start out at the small stuff, and be promoted up to the big jumps. Like someone else said, they should just put a ramp, and then like a tabletop, that was if you come up short, you don't kill yourself

in sweden their is no ramps at local regular motocross tracks.it's a shame. i think if the sport will get bigger that's a great place to start.

I know i know im 11 on an xr 80. but it would be a good idea i mean have on small 3,4,5 foot jump for the minis like me:D and one for novice riders like 2 stoke 80s and stuff then keep going higher as you go. but the area should be fenced off then oyu have to have pernts porrmisson or be over 18 or sumin then only let like 5 mabye 10 riders out at a time that way no one wrecks and stuff. i mean it would be a good expersnse for every one.

ride at your own risk mentality. why be elitest if some kid wants to learn something new. but insurance for that would be hell to pay.

Heck no, sounds more like natural selection rather than natural progression.

MX is dangerous enough as it is, can you imagine the track owners liability/insurance etc.

I learned to jump in my back yard, FMX should be the same, or there should be specific FMX tracks, jumping areas a la scateboarding etc.

that would be cool but the nearest track is like 45 miles away

it would really be great if they did, but i really can't see it happining, all kinds of levels of riders hittin the same jumps, just too risky

August 11th, 2002, 04:33 PM
im with KMX,193 yeh it shold hav that same thing but so people dont run into each others a***** they shold hav a few guys in there controling the riders bout to hit the ramp:D

Maybe they could build a ramp into a tabletop. Then it would be safer.

i say HELL YEAH!!!! but have say 3 ramps at diffrent heights and distances with a table top kinda set up for the landing, set them up at say 10,30 and 50 ft gaps

I think that Freestyle is a part of the motocycling sport.

Lets face it your just as likely to get hurt riding your own farm trails than you are jumping a 50 foot gap. In any case i think it is more dangourus ridin a packed 125 moto class than hittin a kicker.

As they say "MOTORSPORT IS DANGOURUS" Period.

No.

I have seen too many mx riders drift to the fmx ramp at the local track and totally clear the down side and get hauled away. The average racer has no idea of how a fmx ramp can pop a bike/rider but still go so far. Usually they hit ramps a full gear too high.

I say fence it in and have riders qualify to ride by taking small steps during a day when the ramp is moved back every session.

Yes...

Tsawwassen (A4D was just there) has 2 ramps set up 24/7 and it definately adds to the popularity of FMX.. Not many people can afford ramps, and especially a place to put them..

i don't think there is nothing wrong a freestyle ramp at the local track..i remember two years ago i think it was in minot,ND they were havin the MX races and for a half time show they had big FMX jump and had a freestyle team called Deep South Disturbance(I think they were from Australia now they go around doin show i think) they were doin there stuff and it was pretty cool...:)

I see to many kids going big off ramps and yes they got balls but they have no style! If the bike got sideways or messed up they wold have no idea how to correct it.They should build small dirt tables for the beginers.the ramps at tracks...you should have to prove your intermediate or pro status to hit them

hey man you were there in 2001? I was there too! Do you live in ND? I think there should be ramps at tracks, we had one at our track last weekend and we were only letting the good riders hit it.

There is one track locally that HAS a ramp set up already on it. There is a long "safety" flat top, that slightly pitches downwards. It has a sweet spot that is sort of a target landing (hard to hit). As long as riders clear about 35ft, they make it to the top. The locals have no problems landing in the 75ft sweet spot. The only trouble is, One kid has the key to the chains that are wrapped around it. If he's not there, Nobody jumps it. We have our own set up elsewhere. The ramp falls under the same insurance that the track holds. I know other tracks around here that are planning to add ramps.

I personaly would like to see ramps at local clubs. Insurance would be the key though. Being able to afford to pay the extra premiums could be an issue for some clubs. Being able to meet the insurance companies requirements could be a problem as well. As Crusty pointed out earlier, there would have to be some type of rider classification based upon skill level for riders to be able to use the ramps. The ramps would probably need to be fenced off, but more importantly, there would have to be full time supervision of the freestyle area, included with first aid personel. Volenteers hold the key, as most clubs would not be able to afford to pay for the personel to man the gates, marshal the tracks and freestyle area, etc....... keeping all that in mind, if it were possible to aheive all of the above, there would be no doubt that it would be good for the fmx sport. To be able to provide a safe enviroment for all the juniors who want to get into fmx, where they can ask the senior fmx'rs questions and advice, and more importantly WATCH & LEARN would be great, coz there is a first time for everybody!
