hi,
it would be a great help if any-one had any infomation on building a ramp eg..dimentions, prices, distances, materials.
I live in the south island of New Zeland and there is no fmx here at all, inclueding no infomation.
I'm used to jumping dirt jumps but i like the idea of getting a ramp, and im sure it wouldnt take long for all my mates to get into it as well, and so we can get some fmx going here.
any help is appreciated.

yep, i built one off that design a year ago. Even tho mine didnt come out smooth like in that pic, it was still a good ramp. But i broke both my ankles after overjumping, only 2 weeks into jumpin it.
so its been sold now :D

We have purchased ramps from a company called Trick Factory Ramps. They are great quality, and let me tell you just cause you know how to weld, or have a buddy that welds, doesn't mean you are going to get a great ramp. The way to go is to put expanede metal on the ramp instead of wood. The metal just doesn't wear out and gives great traction. If you do use wood, make for sure for sure for sure that it is treated with Rhino Lining or LineX. The wood wears out so fast, and the whole thing can turn into a worthless pile of crap in no time. The thing we like about the Trick Factory ones is that they are trailers, so you just fold up the lip, hook it to your truck and off you go. Let me tell you how much you are going to want to move your ramp, and what a pain in the A$$ it can be. The wheels help a ton.

cheers alexfmx & crustydemond its a great help
what kind of grip do u use on the ramp?u mentioned "rhino lining"
but i'm not sure what that is.
hey crusty,
does your jump give u much kick, or is it quite smooth?

on the ramp in that pic (dont have it ne more), it was a smooth ride all the way up it, but it threw the bike far too high
Thats mainly because its got too much of a flat section near the top, it needs to be curved more smoothly.
it was only a 45ft gap i overjumped and my ankles shattered, so it was definetly throwing me too high :D

go to www.girsmx.com, this site has the ramp emanuel troux and cyril porte use, it may look like a distance ramp but it is huge.
I have recently had it made for under $1000 aust, i haven't riden on it yet but i will tell you about it when i first hit it.

Crusty what do i put on the ply, its already on but dont know what to put on with the sand.
freerider
September 14th, 2001, 04:04 AM
I know someone who put clear coat varnish on the ply board
and while it was still wet put a even and small amount of sand!
It gives it a heap of tracktion!!

September 14th, 2001, 04:21 AM
i thought u were gonna use mesh mulcs?? works heaps better..
anyways, I just got a jar and puched some holes in the lid,and fill it with sand.
then i just got a paint roller, with some crappy paint, roll some paint on, spirinkle some sand on. Just kept doin that for the whole ramp.
then i let it dry for a day, and repeated it a few more times :)

Crusty i was gonna use mesh but it costs tyo much, also i got the ply for free, which sort of swayed me to the ply. Only a week until i can set it up tghen ill be bustin huge.

that rhinoliner or truck bed liner works awasome from what i see. the trick factory ramps i've seen have never had to be resurfaced and they've probably been ridin on about 2 hours a day for months and months

crusty demon
are you saying that the ramps need a curve near the top so u dont get sent high
crustyfmx250
September 15th, 2001, 04:34 AM
nah man, they arent meant to have a bit of an uncurvrved part near the top, just the transition of mine wasnt smooth enuf. Ill upload a pic in a sec pointing out what i mean
crustyfmx250
September 15th, 2001, 04:38 AM
right where the arrows pointing,it was curved a little too much, so the top of my ramp was a little more steep, and the flat spot was a bit too long
slider
September 15th, 2001, 08:10 AM
In the case of this ramp, move the sweet spot toward the approach like crustydemon_69 said but also lengthen the flat area at the top to get rid of the kick this ramp would deliver. I have found a 3 to 4' flat area at the top is best. If you make it longer the bike will not "pop" like you want as the suspension is already starting to rebound which will cause a loss of height and a dead feeling when in the air. Make the final angle at 35 to 37 degrees for the best pop and still get 55 to 80 feet out of it depending on the transition design.
Good luck.

for wood ive heard that u can cover it with carpet. i dunno, havent seen it or tried it. but i spose it could work. the only other cheap thing for ramp tops that ive heard of is paint and sand mix.
shaolin
September 16th, 2001, 03:47 AM
ive seen some of that at some comps but the carpet rips to shreds and if it gets even a tiny bit moist u get heaps of wheel spin on top of the wheel spin u would get from using carpet

the best ramps out there, are made by a virtuallyl underground ramp company called "evolution ramps". there ramps are 9 inches talller then freeride and 2 feet shorter. some of the top fmxers are rushing to buy ramps from him right now. another strong point of his ramps are, they cost twice as less as freeride of trick factory. who needs a ramp on a trailer when you can get one for twice as less with inflatable, removable wheels and storage area????? if anyone wants to get in contact wiht evolution ramps, call 1-760-789-6876, ask for aaron. please tell him john reiser told you about the ramps. thanks

Freerider, find some plans for a ramp you want, then go and ask for quotes from metal fabricators around u, try and find smaller size fabricators coz they will give a a better price.
A ramp like rev1 hessian aggression ramp will cost you around $1500 to $1900, but if u go with somethin like the one at www.girsmx.com, it will cost around$1000, to $1300.
Hope that helps,
cheers

hey whats up
i have got a ramp built and got it back the other day
today was my first day on it and on my first attempt on it, i was sent up way too high
and landed about 3 meters past the landing
would i be better to dig it into the ground making it not as steep or move it back
more? any other ideas please help thanx
crustyfmx250
October 8th, 2001, 10:17 PM
why not just slow down a little? simple really...
or if u dont wanna do that just move it back ametre or two.
And digging it into the ground would make it worse. Itd take away the transition at the bottom, effectively giving it even more kick i think.
How big/small :p is the gap youve got it at?

how many cubic meters dirt dod you use for that landing ramp crusty?
because i have been inquiring about some dirt from some constrution companys, and they siad they had around 100 cubic meters.wiil it be enough?
shaolin
October 10th, 2001, 05:17 PM
how much does dirt cost for say, 100 cubic metres
crustyfmx250
October 10th, 2001, 06:07 PM
I have no idea how much dirt was in mine....or how much the dirt would be..
I just use dirt from my own place, and keep building till the landing looks good (which i now realise is a hell of a lot bigger than what i thought..)
beaker
October 10th, 2001, 07:19 PM
to buy dirt it's like $10 nz, per cubic meter, thats to cart it.
if you wait till a consurtion company is do work near to home they just give it to ya.
AusFMX
October 10th, 2001, 10:19 PM
Ring up a pool company. I think you will find that they will give you more than you ask for, in most cases for free. When they dig up dirt, they actually have to pay to dispose of it, if it's your land and perfectly legall for them, you will hvae no trouble getting some.
slider
October 10th, 2001, 10:35 PM
A good landing will take about 300 cubic yards. Keep in mind the pic above is "minimal" landing specs. In this case, bigger is better. lol
