I don't polish up my frame....but a product called Autosol is a real good alloy polisher....it comes in like a paste..and u put a tiny bit on a clean rag and do circular motion on the bit you are workin on.

if i were to polish it i would get a new razor blade and scrape the crush marks off it, then i would get an extremely fine sand paper and wet sand it , then get mothers polish and get a buffer and buff that bee-otch down
now i was over at my buds track the other day and this guy tried to tell me all his did was just sand his and it turned like a mirror, which im not calling hima liar cuz anythings possible but i just find it really hard to believe that just doing that would make it mirror like

i heard aluminum polish works good too, i was thinkin the same question for my CR. i think it would look good if i could get it super shiny, almost like chrome, it would clash with my FMF pipe.

when i do the wheels on my jeep i get a coarse rubbing compound cuz by the time i buff them they are really tarnished. then i buff them with an electric buffer. you can make them as shinny as you want but it takes a looong time. then when your done go to the auto parts store and get some stuff called Never Dull. dont get evershine its a crappy knock off. then keep applying never dull every know and then to keep the shine. if you keep up with the never dull then you wont have to polish it again

the swing arm on my bike is kinda ths same but what i do is rub on this autosol stuff leave it for 10-15 min then hit it hard with a rough scouring pad (not the metal ones they will wreck it) then leave it for another 10-15 min then wipe off the excess that will work

If yah don't mind spending a couple bucks, check out a sandblasting shop and they can coat it for you. They use some special methods for the aluminum. This is what I got my old bike to look like. it was sick!!!!

June 16th, 2002, 06:54 AM
Yah it did, I just bought a new one with the money they gave me. A 2000 250.
The shop themselves actually found the bike in some kids garage, it was smashed a bit like they had dropped it on the pavement. The pipe was literally grinded from it, footpeg bent, hole in # plate, broken rear fender, clutch cable freyed and grips. Maybe it was ghost ridden....I dunno.

I wanted to but the bike shop wouldnt give me any information about them finding it, and I couldn't get anything from the cops. They were very difficult about giving me any info about it being found. I was a bit mad about that. Anywho, I actually had the chance to buy it back, (cuz when I got the cheque, if it was found then the shop owned it) but said forget it cuz I didn't want something that I knew was raped. I moved on and now have something just as good or better. :)

when you spend that much time on a bike, it like becomes a part of you! i spent so much on my 125, fixing all time, and then when i got my 250, i was selling the 125 and even though the thing was a pile of crap and the transmission was gone and the clutch was burnt i still felt sad selling it thinking that ill never get to ride that piece anymore! i took it for a last hard boot when the kid went to go pick up the money for it though! lol thats why you dont buy used bikes. lol

hey warptkid, is that black powder coating on there? did it ever rub off from your boots or whatever? i'm thinkin about getting something done to my frame, either powder coating or anodizing, but i dunno which is stronger.

June 22nd, 2002, 11:38 AM
localboy,
I only got to ride the bike for about 6 or 8 hours with it painted, and it didn't even start to wear then. After it was found 2 weeks later, it had worn off near the footpegs but the bike was abused so I don't really know. I took it to a shop that does sandblasting and everything else like that. It was something else besides powder coating that they did to the frame because it was aluminum. I think it was worth it, if you are concerned about it wearing, put some thick clear sticker on the area.

YO OZ!
i got some of that AUTOSOL stuff, that stuff is gold man! i can see myself in my frame now. thanks dude, i polished tons of stuff on my bike, my frame, my kickstart lever, my crankcase, my silencer. the bike looks sick now!! thanks so much dude! it didnt polish my swingarm though, different aluminum. but the FMF PWII shines like stank now! the bike sparkles in the sun lol. thanks alot again bro!
and anyone know how to polish your swingarm good? i always hear stuff like having a polished swingarm? how do you do that, you gotta get it done or something?

yeah i tried it on the swingarm but it didnt make much difference except maybe take a little dullness out. i was wondering if ya have to put it to a polishing wheel. (a benchgrinder with a polishing wheel instead of a grinding stone) but im not gona go through that trouble. that would take ages.

obviously u do have the alloy frame, to my knowledge they baught the alloy frame out on the 125s in 97 and the 250s in 98

actually smart A** its the opposite, the 250s got it in 97, and the 125 in 97 still had the old frame, then in 98 the 125s got the new frame. nice try though, go ride your SX, KTM boy! lol :p just messin,

So anyway, i DONT have the aluminum frame but about the swing arm, im almost positive you have to use a type of Rouge or somthing, cuz you said that stuff which OZ pointed out didnt really work on the swing arm... probably a gritter grain or somthing... i actually tried it before with a buffing wheel on a grinder but the rouge was too fine... i was wondering maybe i have to sand blast it first? then try the rouge or what.. maybe somone would know cuz the swing arm isnt like the aluminum frames... if somone knows please tell me

To all bike owners wondering about polishing aluminium, i have posted some pics of two bikes we have recently completed doing... theres my'00 Cr250 and Luke Cole's '01 Cr250, in regards to the frame and other areas that dont have a cast surface, i.e, smoother appearance: use a fine grade sandpaper (wet & dry) and work your way down to really fine grades, somewhere in the vacinity of around 1600grit. Using the sandpaper will also remove any chips or burs from the surface. We then used different types of buffing compounds, note that although remarkable for giving a high lustre appearance, Autosol paste is fairly coarse and doesnt give a super shiny mirror finish. We constructed a "rag buffer" using an old drill bit and twining strands of wool around to build to a suitable thickness. Then place the tool in an electric drill, preferbly a high speed one.(gives a better finish). Polish the surface using a liberal amount of pressure as the greater the heat applied to the area-the greater shine acheived.
As 4 the swing arm on CR's, we all know they have an entirely different surface, if you actually run your finger nail against the grain you can feel the machine marks, therefore to achieve a mirror finish we needed to remove this surface. Once again it basically took a hell of a lot of time and patience. Sandpaper with sanding blocks and then buffing, but once completed it is definately worth it!!!
So be prepared to put the hard yards in, but the result speaks for itself, just remember that bikes do get riden, and therefore droppped and scatched and whatever the ###k else, so weigh up the value.
Hope this can be of some help, oh and btw, Coley's CR is for sale...any takers??? email me PUREFMX (http://www.geocities.com/pureaddrenalin) EMAIL (edwarw@kooee.com.au)

i used autosol and my frame looks just like that. maybe its the pic that might take away some of the real shine. but from those pics my frame is the same, as for the swingarm, i dont care to do all that work for that. its DIRTbike, its gonna get dirty and wear off. i just got a good pressurewasher so that and autosol, satisfies me. by the way dude those are really sweet bikes! bust big!

yesterday i went out and gave my swing arm a compleat over haul (looks wise) i attacked it with come corse sand paper then got out the big scratches with finer stuff, broke out the good old AUTOSOL and polished her up good now it looks like a mirror
i kinda got acrried away and did the same to my clutch cover, kick start & pipe (striped all the paint off first) it may be old but now she looks bloody tops :D

It's asy to do a swing arm. It only takes like a day too. You just use 220-320 to take that machine finish deal off. Ten about 600 to smooth it out. Then 800 and so on. Till it looks really shiny without polish. Then you take the polish to it and use a buffer with a foam pad and polish till you can't polish no more. You'll have the shiniest swing arm around.
