View Full Version : Should a bike roll in gear w/ the clutch pulled IN?

I bought a '97 RM250 today, and it's the first bike I've owned.

My question is this.

With the bike IN gear (any gear) and the clutch pulled in, the bike doesn't freewheel/roll. It tries to turnover like i'm push starting it.

Howver in neutral obviously it rolls fine, clutch in or out (duh).

I've been told that it WILL NOT roll freely in gear even w/ the clutch in, and to roll it it neutral, and this is fine, I'm just wondering if something is wrong.

The clutch seems to work fine while riding the bike, and when I pull it stopped the bike doesn't want to go forward.

Can anyone give me some help?

Thanks a lot,

Based on your information, that is normal.

well that's good to know.

can anyone explain why this is the case?

Is some ammount of RPM's needed to have the motor 'spin' past the small grip the clutch can still produce even while pulled fully in?

My car backround is saying this is absolutely incorrect, but I'm sure that you two are right, I'm just dying to know why!

;)

Thanks again

ill take a stab at it , the reason your car moves while the clutch is in is becuase its so heavy the little bit of resistance isnt much, because the clutch doesnt totally stop everything it just slows it down

put ur bike on the stand and take the chain off, start the bike and put it in gear, the sprocket spins,,,,if u pull the clutch the sprocket still spins

All suzukis I've found do that...Including mine

thats cause suzuki clutches suck. flat out. my buddy got a 2001 Rm125 and it never even did that when it was brand new. my 1996 Rm125 clutch sucked wang. it was shot though, and it sucked while i was riding too. and i just bought my 2000 CR250, its brand new, and the clutch is wicked, i can pull the lever in a couple cm's and it will totally disengage. i can pull in the clutch a little bit, pin the gas, and there is no power at all at the back wheel. and yes i can push mine while the bike is off, the bike is in gear and the clutch is in and it rolls fine. get this: i can have my bike running have it in gear, pull in the clutch and roll backwards by pushing with the tips of my toes. i find that amazing, could never think of doin that on my RM. should have got a Cr thats my advice! haha lol j/j. it seems normal dude its a slowzuki!

well I'd imagine a "shot" clutch would suck riding ;)

As for the rolling if it's not a big deal, I'll roll it in Neutral, I have no problem with that, just didn't understand why it was the case.

Thanks for the help everyone.

So what 1997 bike would you have bought?

(NEED a '97 or earlier in CA b/c of the Smog Nazis)

Wasn't the RM rated best the in the fork and suspension dept that year?

And we know the '97 CR's were stiff as hell in stock form.

Oh, and as for the starting in gear, and clutch working and just not being able to push, my Mechanical Engineering/Riding buddy said it's b/c of the wet clutch, and the thick oil that's cold won't allow it to fully disengage, but if say I rode it for an hour, shut it off, and tried to push it in gear, it would probably push without any resistance.

Interesting to know if indeed he's correct.

(Btw his CR's clutch doesn't allow him to push in gear either when cold, 2002 CR250, but maybe it's just his bike)

yeah you buddy is pretty much rite when the bike is cold the clutch is sticky because of the oil. like when you get 2 pieces of glass and put water on one and sit the other on top they stick together. when your bike is warm it should not do it as the oils is warmed up and you have been using your clutch and it has freed up. that is a pretty basic way of explaning it but thats pretty much it.

mine actually got worse as the bike warmed up lol. even on my buddy's 2001 its not bad, but it gets a bit worse when the engine is warm.

i liked the suspension on my 96, it was actually really good like you said. dude no matter wat id say get a CR no joke, i dont care wat these yammi and KX kids tell ya. the quality is not all there. youll pay a little more for a honda but they put a little more effort into making things last. ask guys like crusty. ask him about his old honda. the stories for hondas being good are endless. but if you like the RM and its in good cond. stick with it., you got lucky for now.... but its a 250 so its prolly better condintion than most 125's! goodl luck

oh and thats wierd your buddies bike wont roll with the clutch, i got a brand new 2000 CR250 and it works just fine like that.
