spark = really hot thing
arrestor = a stopper
a spark arrestor is basicly just a part that cuts down the amount of sparks that shoot out of the exhaust while the motor is running... removing it and replacing with a normal silencer would probably cause more sparks to fly
(some states have laws about running without a spark arrestor, might wanna check with your local laws on what bikes require them)

most of the time it's n atachmnt to stops sparks from coming out of the silencer. Alot of orv parks and sand dunes make you have them. But all it does when you take them off is give the bike more power. Thre' not to many sparks that shoot out anyway (at least not on mine. It sounds like an older bike is it?

no the bike is a '98 model. would leaving it out be having a risk of melting his piston?

i cut my stock silencer pretty much in half so its really short, it gave it a good bottom end power gain, but ive herd alot of bull#### about its gonna melt the piston if you do that. i think its bs because i have had it cut down for maybe 4 months i ride almost everyday and nothin has happened. is it true?

maybe it depends on how hard you ride your bike!
if you just mess around and ride your back yard, trails or even freestyle, you are not puttin that much stress on your engine, racing is a completely different story!
i know this has nothing to do with the topic. but i rode for the first time this weekend with racers, and i would like to say.......well lets just say they are different breed of riders! *cough cough spoiled rich boys cough*

Don't knock racers man! Alot of MXers are spoiled, but that's only if they were like... born to race, like their parents home school them. I race alot, and I get accused of being a spoiled rich kid too, just because my bike has valved suspension and exhaust mods. That's what it takes to win in a highly competitive enviornment. Plus I ride faster and harder than most of the losers who just ride freestyle near me. Maybe its cause they're stupid redneck hicks from southern Louisiana. Maybe its cause they spend too much time making fun of people who can outjump them any day... Just ride, and stop whining.

By the way, Spark Arresters are only nessescary if you ride hare scrambles or Enduros. Or if you do alot of trail riding. If I may be a spoiled rich racer for a second, I suggest you toss that spark arrestor and buy yourself an FMF Titanium muffler. It delivers the most power. However, for those on a budget, I used to use a Bills Pipe Silencer, and if they don't make it for your bike, go buy yourself a pro circuit shorty muffler. They both give alot of power. Go for broke.

I race. I'm far from spoiled . i have a 92 cr 125 almost completely stock which i have to pay for everthing on cause my sis gets all the money. so not all racers are spoiled rich boys.

I cant see how doing anything to the silencer could do any harm to the engine.. Using my knowledge I would say it couldnt..
I am a racer and im not rich or spoilt.. Ive put all my money into racing and bikes.. Its all i have.
I also do a little freestyle but I havnt really spent much time on it.
Im racing intermidate (b) class right now so its getting pretty intense

Modding your silencer can do alot. IF you don't know this and you rae here's something wrong with you. But a spark arrestor isn't actualy the silencer. It shouldjust be an attacthment on the end. All it does is stop sparks... nothing else. i you take it off you get more performance and power out of the bike but some sparks will come out. But it does nothing to the motor by taking off the arrestor as long as there's still a silencer on it.

Yah a silencer can modify how the power is put out but melt the piston.. thats kinda new..
If your not using a pipe period than i can see it having problems..
