adobe after effects is pretty much the standard if you're going for the commercial/music video thing, it's like photoshop only everything is animatable, adobe premiere is good if you're doing something longer with less effects.
people also use final cut pro for stuff, i dunno what it is, never seen it, and i think it might only be for mac

I was wondering the same thing, I like premiere I played with the demo of premiere pro but it is so dang hard and complicated! I have Studio 8 but im making a wakeboard movie and I want it to split the frames more than one second apart. But what is a good inexpensive program for action sports. Or is there a downloadable manual for premiere? I have windows XP, no mac. available.
(I dont have kazaa but my friends do, with 56k modems of course. :( )

Sorry.. this is a little offtopic.. but I downloaded Adobe Premier.. the tryout/preview version from the Adobe site.. and every time I try to open it, it gives me this message:
"Adobe Premier Pro cannot run on this computer because the processor does not support the SSE instruction set."
Then it closes. Anyone know if I can get it working somehow?

what kind of processor are you running? SSE is how the application uses the processor (tells it what to do).

Yah, Adobe After Effects is good for creating and adding effects and stuff for your video. Final Cut Pro works with movie, audio, after effects, photoshop ect.. You piece the work/video/animations, together with FCP. If your good with adobe software and pick up FCP, you can pretty much make dvd/tv/commercial quality productions. FCP works ok with PC's and works better with Macs.
Final Cut Pro is expensive though. I think, somewhere around a thousand I believe..I'm lucky I get free software at work.
