Hey,
Who was the one that told everyone to go call their local pool co. for free dirt??? Well whoever it was thanks alot!!!
Cuz i called my local pool shop and they said they would dump the dirt at my house for free!
But they said that they prolly wont make ne pools till around April so this spring im buildng me a freestyle compound haha, also where my mom works they have alot of bulldozers/bobcats, and the boss said that he would give me one for like a week or two, so could ne body give me some sugestions for building a freestyle compound... thanx.
BTW its gonna be all dirt so no metal ramps:(.. but that ok:D:D

how far can you jump?
Best tip i can give u, is dont build anything thats beyond your skill level. And make sure u pack the upramps and landings down hard, it gets very annoying when they start to rut out :D

October 26th, 2001, 04:11 AM
all i can say is if your buildin a dirt track nuthin higher than 2 metres and make a few small doubles, and mainly have tabletops and single tabletops they are the best to learn on

Man do what you want to do, not what Crusty wants you to do. For all we know he could be 13 yr old with a 1979 XR70, do what you want.
How much dirt are they dumping?

lol i never thought about that ausFMX hehe i wonder if i should make a freestyle compound.. hmm... dammit now i dont know what i wanna do, maybe i can build a track and then make a seprate freestyle jump to the side or something??
BTW they are gonna dump a lot of dirt, but its not gonna be all at once its gonna be a little at a time so i guess i'll have to make it in stages or sections or Something! lol, ill figure something out tho but if ya have ne more comments or suggestions then feel free to post away thanx 4 ur help guys!

yeah thats great man, get all the kids in the world with little experience to build FMX jumps
I hope u dont feel too guilty when someone gets hurt badly.
And as for your jumps cr, i probably shouldnt have said build a track, mulcs said it better. If u are gonna build some big jumps, either make em table tops, or just make them doubles, but a huge safety deck on the landing.

Hey, If I were you i would either plan it out, and find out exactly how much dirt you are getting at each dumping then build it in stages, or......wait till it is all dumped and build it all in one go.

Crusty,
I think riding motocross is just as dangerous as FMX. Just because you got hurt doing FMX doesn't mean he will. If he builds a track, he will have jumps, and he will most likely do tricks off them. I think it would be much safer to make a track for what he is intending to use it for FMX. That way it willbe designed for FMX, not for speed and cornering skills. Let him do what he wants. We're all sorry that you hurt your ankles up so bad, but that doesn't mean everyone else will, anyway he said he wasn't going to have a ramp.

yeh i spose...but all im trying to do is make evryone aware that jumping needs lots of bike control, which will only come from practicing...
and im trying to save kids from potential broken bones...better to take it slowly, and be more skilled b4 building something huge

Kids aren't going to listen, if they want a FMX park, they're going to get a FMX park!

i'm with you crusty, you need to have some skill on your bike before you start trying to jump and do tricks. if you learn on a variety of terrains, when you start trying to jump and do tricks you'll be doing them way before and better than the guy who just tried starting off on the jumps. maybe there are some exceptions, just pace yourself. oh yea, you really should save up for some gear, its worth the money.

i dont know much about bike skills and all that stuff but i was jumping bmx jumps first day i had a bike. just go really slowly, first thing i reckon you should build is a nice berm with a 20 to 40 foot table out of it. also if a dirt bike school comes near your twon DO IT! i started one today and its awesome! also experiment with ur bike lots so yoo will know how it will reacts when stuff happens. main thing is to just HAVE FUN:D

Let me tell you all what i think........
I think he should get his bike skills and i think every one even thinkin about doin freestyle should atleast have 8 months experience,,,,. These days kids see freestyle on ESPN or somthin and think that looks cool so they go get a bike, then they build a tiny jump and do one footers of it and call emselfs freestylers and are just major posers., If you want people to respect you as a rider get the bike skills by racin or just riding around alot,,, because even if your not goin around a trak, any time on the bike will get your skills up.
NEXT TIP: WHEN YOU DO GET TO THE LEVEL
When you think your jumping a table top long enough and want to start gettin into bigger jumps,,, dig the dirt out from just behind the lip and ad more lebth at the end of the landing ramp,, (i did this for about a year starting at 40 foot and continuing to build it up till 65 foot then when i could jump that good i took all the dirt out of the gap and made a huge landing rampso the jusp was now 70 foot..
LASTLY:
Now when you can comfortably jump around 65-70 foot you may want to think about a ramp. iv just started jumping ramps and they rule,, but you do need the skills on dirt before you start jumping em.
So start small get the bike skill( not spacifically from racing just ride around alot over mounds and berms) Then once youv done that for about a year start tryin to jump,, then do that for a while then maybe try some tricks. Your only 13 so you can take ages to get good, dont rush it.

There is really nothing we can do, it happend with BMX, and skate, and Inline Skates, and Snowboarding, kids see how awesome the sport is, and they wanna try it.
Having such an awesome sport comes at a price, don't try to save all the kids in the world. Don't forbid them from jumping, just tell them of you experiences, and warn them of the risks. I guarentee you they will listen if you don't try to order them around, if you do, they will rebell and do exactly what you say not to.
Fear is inbuilt, people know their limits, and unless pressured won't go past them. If your riding, and your friend is with you, and they aren't jumping as big as you, don't pressure them into doing it, they will most likely get hurt.
Anyway, thats just mostly my experiences, and what I have found to work and what not to work. Hope they help anyone wanting to start freestyle. :)

cr 8_0 build what you feel your skill level is at, if you feel you can take on a FMX compound then go for it.i would go along with what crusty said to start out with, dirt is not like concrete, you can always regroom the course. a track is a little easier to hit jumps wiht and doesn't take as much work to get good air off of jumps with. but just go with the level of riding you feel you are at.

And everyone else that said the same thing! They know how it works! I don't know about riding for 8 months to a year before you start jumping, but try and get your bike skills up, or you WILL get hurt. The thing to remember most is to not push your limits until you feel you have total control over the bike in the air and on the ground.
I like the idea of building a table and digging it out and adding to the landing. That's what I used to do on big jumps with my BMX bike. It lets you get comfortable with the jump (because it's a tabletop) and then it slowly gets bigger, and turns into a double with a HUGE nice smooth landing :)

You definatley gotta have to bike skills. Anybody can go out and hit a double in wide open, clear it, and land like a goof with no style. COMFORT on the bike is the main thing. Once your comfortable enough on the bike, the fear goes away a whole lot. You try more things, and you have much more confidence. Dude I wouldnt even worry about planning out when your gonna do which tricks, just have fun, forget about what everybody else is doin, and just let it flow. Youll know when your ready, and when you are ready, youll be SO much happier than you waited untill you were comfortable enough instead of just doing it to keep up with other people.

that is very true. that is how i got hurt. im a good rider and all but i just wastn reasy for the metal ramp. i knew it but i did it anyways just so i could catch up to my buds that are already hitting it. big mistake. but i learned from my mistake and i hope that most of you guys that are in the same situation i was wont make the mistake of riding way over your head when your just not ready to.
