View Full Version : DINGUS's ramp
DINGUS
February 14th, 2002, 07:45 AM
I started on 02-13-02 - this pic is at about 5 work hrs
I've got one side tacked in - except for a couple of supports...
I'll post my progress - hope to get a lot more done in the next three days -
I want to make this ramp break down in the mid section - What is the best method for making a strong joint , like some type of pin system or hinges? Open to ideas.
I think it's warm enough outside now to get to work - later...

Are u building that on a radius or to your plans? Anyways i can't wait till i get my materials next week!
Looking good dude, just imagine u might be hitting it next week!

how big is it? it looks like about 5 ft tall and how did you get the top bar their did you bend it have it bent or cut it then bend it?

Andrew - I'm building it basically from plans, but Ive made a few changes here and there, but the angle is basically the REV. 1
RedBull - Its 8'x23'x4, basically the Rev.1, scale it with the pontoon boat and forklift in the background of the pic. I made the transition by cutting the tubing. I was suprised how easily the angle came after making the cuts that slider came up with.
It's 3:15 PM here now and I just finished tacking the second side frame out - I'll post more pics tomorrow when I get it completely framed up. Later.

Did you frame up the sides together? I've seen ramps where people put the sides together separately, and they're all twisted of and uneven.
That looks small in that picture, but if it's 8 feet tall, it's looking pretty good :)
Good luck to ya.

look at the fork lift in the background. Its taller than the fork lift. If you dont compare it tho it does look kinda small

Right on DINGUS! The angle looked familiar to me.
Lets all ask him how small it is after he hits it the first time.
As for breaking it apart, what metal thickness is the frame built out of?
If .120 wall, consider this:
Break apart at 3 locations. My Rev.1 only parts in half and moving it sucks. Make the tall part, called the Upper Section, ~9' long. The middle section, called the Lower Section, ~9' long. The bottom section, called the transition, at ~5' long.
The Upper and Lower sections can bolt together with 3/8" bolts. Probably too heavy to use hinges unless you use 6" Heavy Duty, or larger. 2 bolts per side will be plenty. Make the holes larger than the bolts to allow some movement for uneven ground. Also, have washers to space this as needed, again for uneven ground if you want to bolt it tight. Be sure to drill these close to the outside of the support bars so you and access the bolts to add washers easier.
The Transition should be hinged to allow for uneven surfaces and you can use 4" Heavy Duty hinges for this. You may have to look hard to find these but they will support this weight. Leave a 1" gap between the Transiton and the Lower Section when welding this on. Any other ideas that allow the Transition to move is OK as long as it is heavy duty. I grind the end off one end of the pins on the hinges and replace them with 5/16" hardened bolts. The original pins should be about 3/8". The smaller bolts will go in easily.
If you add wheels to the high end of each large half, it will be much easier to move. While it is light now, it may weigh close to 1,500# when done.

SevenInd - Yesterday while I was working on it - I realized something that I should have known - don't make the two sides separately... don't laugh, I guess I should have checked the posts sooner to get your advice... but I should have known better -BUT both came out really nice and laying one on the other, they match up great - I got lucky -
Andrew! If you plan on building listen to this stuff - I hate to see you waste metal - I suggest making a pair of each thing, like the supports, - If you make one for one side, make another one right then - It'll save you time and frustration, and everything will come out a lot closer.
slider - Thank you for all the information and time you put into helping each of us out. I know I can speak for everbody when saying that. Last summer I had the idea of building a ramp, and I looked and looked for info, but couldn't find anything, so I kinda gave it up - Then about a month ago, somebody pointed me to the Hessian Agression, FMXramps, and this site. Now a month later I've got a ramp frame in my shop, Thanks man.
All the tubing in the ramp is 1/8" wall - what is that like11 gauge? Anyways - Ill do like you suggested and make the ramp break into three sections - I was planning on two, but like you said I would still be very heavy.
Thanks -

9 gauge is a hair thicker than 1/8"
Slider, same here, looking for plans long time ago and threw the idea out the window untill my friend Danny found Hessian Aggressian. Thanks for all the info. and support!;)
Dingus, thats how I plan on fabricating it. I kinda gained that knowledge working with wood. The thing that sucks is next week is Midwinter-break for us (week off) so I can't get into the school.
Get more pics up Dingus <------(thats a funny/cool name):D

I've got the bottom section welded up - It's finished except for a little grinding, the surface and paint.
It's 4pm here, and I just finished making the middle section and top section of both sides from that one big ### side piece - It's so much lighter sectioned up - I'll probably work on it some more later tonight...
it's coming together...

looking good Dingus... I'm killing myself looking at these ramps...I gots to wait another week to start on mine... I actually lose sleep because I want to ride so bad but all the jumps have about 2ft. of water at the bottom of lip and everywhere I go its muddy.
Keep up the good work Dingus, oh, also what bike are u going to be hucking off it?:D

tight Dingus, i gots a 01 cr 250 too. u working out of ur dads shop or something? And are you bolting the thing in 3 sections?
lates
oh also did u have any problems bending the rails like did u have to cut more than was needed?
I see a piece of mesh in those pics, what are u planning to put on for the surface?

Definitely looking good! How many hours would you estimate you've put into it so far?
DINGUS
February 16th, 2002, 02:39 PM
Andrew - Yeah, Im in my step-dads shop... and Im bolting it into three sections like slider suggested - the sections matchup really sweet. I didnt have any prob bending the rails, like I said before, It really suprised me how easily it worked - just go by slider's plans.
Seven Ind - Ive got about twenty hours in it so far.
I go back to work on Sunday and work through Thursday - so I wont be working on the ramp til then... post more when I get back to working on it...later

DINGUS- Where did you get the plans to make that? like whats the angle, how do you get the angle anyway? I mean what i would do i just mesaure the vertical supports to what they are supposed to be , and then bend it by hand and tack it. Looks good tho keep it up :)
